My name is Sandy Micari and I am blessed to be beginning my third year at St. Thomas the Apostle school! I had a wonderful class of first graders the last two years and I look forward to another amazing year with your children! I was a parent at St. Thomas for three years and I am thrilled to be a part of this amazing staff!
My journey in education began many years ago when I earned a bachelor's and master's degree from Saint Joseph College with a dual certification in regular and special education. I began my career teaching special education and then I taught first grade for three years before my daughter Morgan was born. I taught kindergarten for four years and when my son Nicholas was born, I decided to stay home with my children. Our family was blessed with two more sons, Ryan and Matthew. I worked at home for several years caring for our children and our home. I returned to education when my youngest son entered kindergarten. I worked in the West Hartford public schools for six years as a reading tutor and two years ago, I completed a graduate degree in remedial reading and language arts from Central Connecticut State University.
I have many interests outside of school. I love to stay active and I enjoy running with a group of friends. Together, we have completed three half marathons. I love to read books, garden and watch my children play the many sports that they love: football, soccer, basketball, lacrosse and baseball. Our family also loves to travel. We have been blessed to go on many wonderful vacations to visit our country's national parks. Two summers ago, we hiked in Sequoia National Park which was the tenth national park that we have had the privilege to visit! In the wintertime, our family loves to hit the slopes in Vermont or New Hampshire. I learned how to snowboard a few years ago because my children did not believe that I would be able to do it! Through lots of hard work and determination, I surprised them all and I am now a confident snowboarder and able to keep up with them!
I have been very blessed to have four children and I am amazed at how quickly they have grown. My daughter Morgan is now 22 years old. She graduated from Villanova University this May, moved to Washington D.C.,and is now beginning her nursing career at Georgetown University Medical Center. My son Nicholas is 18 years old. He graduated from Northwest Catholic in June and is off to college this year at the University of New Hampshire. My son Ryan is 15 years old and he is beginning his sophomore year at Northwest Catholic and finally, my son Matthew is 13 years old and he will be in 8th grade at St. Timothy's Middle School.
I am thrilled to be working with your children this year in first grade! My passion is teaching reading through all of the subject areas and I am looking forward to meeting each of you and forming a strong home/school connection to help your children thrive in our classroom! I have learned through the years to trust in God and that He always has a better plan for my life than I could ever have hoped for! I truly believe that I am at St. Thomas for His purpose and I am privileged to do His work. I look forward to welcoming your children into our classroom family and working with you throughout the school year!
Some of Mrs. Micari's favorite things...
Mr. Micari and I went to Colorado in 2018 for our 25th wedding anniversary! We drove to the top of Mount Evans, the highest paved roadway in the United States!
